Open Letter to Secretary Rice
From:The World Lebanese Cutural Union (INGO),
Office of the President, Sydney,
Office of the Secretary General, Washington DC.
Press release, February 10, 2005
Her Excellency Dr. Condoleeza Rice, Secretary of State, Washington, DC
Dear Secretary Rice
It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we, the World Council of the
World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU), convey to you our best congratulations for
your appointment as a Secretary of State of the United States of America.
The World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU) , an INGO founded in Mexico City in
1959, is the legitimate representative of the Lebanese Diaspora, a world
community of more than 12 million people on five continents. The WLCU has
branches in 32 countries, including the United States. As you know, there are
about 1.8 million Americans from Lebanese descent, and the WLCU-USA has chapters
in many states
We were particularly appreciative of President Bush's choice for this office,
because of your competence, experience and commitment for a world alliance
against Terrorism and the spread of Democracy where liberty is still captive.
The WLCU was the first Mideast organization in the Diaspora to issue a press
release few days after September 11, declaring its full support to President
Bush and his Administration and standing firmly by the American people in the
War on Terror.
Dear Madam Secretary,
We have since mobilized our communities worldwide, including in the US, to
provide all support, expertise and resources to the American-led international
coalition against Terrorism. Many among our leading members have played a
significant role in their expertise against Terror, with various Governments in
Europe, Australia, and the Americas.
We have been in touch with the National Security Council, State Department and
the US Mission at the United Nations, in addition to the US Congress to push
forward for the liberation of all oppressed peoples in the Middle East,
including Iraq, and particularly our mother country Lebanon.
The WLCU led an international campaign within the countries of immigration,
including France, Belgium, the UK, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Canada,
to secure their support to what became UNSCR 1559. Our delegations have been in
constant contact with the US mission and other delegations to secure that vote
back in September 2004.
We have been attentive to your public statements regarding the campaign against
Terrorism, statements reflecting President Bush's doctrine on Freedom to all. We
have valued your clear remarks to the 9/11 Commission in 2004 and identified
with your statements at the confirmation hearings in 2005. We consider your
appointment as a Secretary of State as a victory for the American people and for
all oppressed nations in the Middle East.
We firmly believe that your tenure at State will embody a historic change
reflecting the great principles announced by President Bush in his State of the
Union Address of February 2005. We declare our support to your vision of a more
democratic Middle East, especially regarding the oppressed nations of Iran and
Syria. But we are convinced that you will be deploying your utmost efforts to
help the Lebanese people liberate themselves from the yoke of the Syrian
occupation.
Dear Madam Secretary,
The WLCU, and its friends around the world and in the United States will stand
by you and the Administration in the long struggle to free the oppressed and is
looking forward to work with you and your office to implement UNSCR 1559 as soon
as circumstances would allow.
We put our human and moral resources at the disposal of the international
campaign against Terrorism, and commit to mobilize our Diaspora along side the
United States and the UN Security Council members to extend assistance to the
civil society of Lebanon in the path of freedom.
We, the World Council of the WLCU, as we congratulate you, wish you the best in
your mission
Sincerely yours,
Joe Baini Professor Walid Phares
