Lebanese group demands Syrian forces leave
04/18/00
BEIRUT, April 18 (Reuters) - Dozens of members of a Lebanese opposition group held a
second day of demonstrations on Tuesday demanding that Syrian troops leave Lebanon.
Supporters of the Liberal National Current (LNC), an underground organization led by
exiled former Christian army commander Michel Aoun, marched in front of the national
museum chanting anti-Syrian slogans. The protesters, surrounded by riot police and
Lebanese army troops, were sprayed by water cannons and then fought with the police.
The LNC, a mainly student organization that has existed throughout the 1990s, has become
more active since Israel announced plans to withdraw from Lebanon. It has focused on
distributing pamphlets calling for Syrian troops to leave. On Monday five LNC protesters
were arrested during a demonstration called to demand the release of two activists
detained on Sunday. Syria is the main power broker in Lebanon with 35,000 troops stationed
there since 1976 when they entered as peacekeepers during its 1975-1990 civil war. Aoun,
who served as Lebanon's Prime Minister in 1988, was exiled to Paris in 1992 almost a year
after he ousted from power by Lebanese and Syrian troops and took shelter in the French
embassy.
