Copts reject the new amendments in the Egyptian Constitution
The meaning of the democracy in Egypt is the president suggests the amendments
to the constitution and the citizens obey. Moreover, the Egyptian democracy is
the president appointed a Coptic governor for an Islamic city in Upper Egypt and
also, the citizens obey. In addition to that appointment, the Egyptian president
gave eighty eight seats for the Muslim Brotherhood in the last election for the
Egyptian parliament and still the citizens obey him. Also, the democracy in
Egypt is when Gamal Mubarak says that the sharia is the principle source of
legislation and in the respond of that the Egyptian citizens obey.
Copts don’t accept the new amendments for the constitution because these new
amendments do include deletion to article II from the Egyptian constitution
because article II contradicts other articles in the constitution which give the
Egyptian citizens to have the right to adopt any other religion. In addition to
its contradiction to the other articles, it ignores the presence of other
religions and beliefs in Egyptian society that have their own provisions, which
in effect downgrades those other beliefs and their followers.
The National American Coptic Assembly is asking President Mubarak, because he is
the only person who has the ability to separate between the religion and the
state and that will provide a wide space to realize equality among Egyptians. As
result of the separation between the religion and the state, there will be
freedom of establishing political parties, separation of authorities, weakening
the grip of the security apparatus, and activating the role of the Human rights
organizations in the Egyptian society.
